Maryland Attends B1G Media Day in Chicago

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference hosted its annual media day on Thursday in Chicago, Ill. ahead of the league's upcoming 2018-19 season. Head coach Mark Turgeon, along with junior guard Anthony Cowan Jr. and sophomore forward Bruno Fernando represented the Terps, who enter their fifth year in the conference.

"I like my team," said head coach Mark Turgeon during his introductory press conference. "I think it's a team that our fan base is going to love. We're young, but our young guys are good. This might be the youngest team I've ever had – but they're talented, they're fun to coach and they're working hard. We're excited for [the season] and it should be a really fun team to watch."

Turgeon and the Terps kicked off practice last month with a team that features six incoming freshmen – who make up a top-10 recruiting class for Turgeon in his eighth season at the helm.

When asked about what the Terps needed to do to return to the NCAA Tournament in 2019 on the BTN Live studio set, Cowan reflected on coaching staff's message throughout preseason practice.

"One of our assistant coaches Bino [Ranson] always talks about being an every day guy," said Cowan. "It's always easy to get up for that first practice, but how are you going to [respond] when you're in the middle of the season and your body hurts; are you still going to bring that same intensity to practice, are you still going to bring that same energy? I think that's the most important thing."

Fernando echoed his teammate's statements, focusing on the importance of consistency with this year's team.

"Being consistent in everything we do," said Fernando when asked about Maryland returning to postseason play. "We have to win the day every day. That's one thing we have to keep doing to get ourselves where we want to be."

Cowan and Fernando spent the day interviewing with national outlets and local media from around the conference. The trio will be back in College Park for the Midnight Mile on Monday, October 15 and Maryland Madness Fan Fest October 19.

Maryland will tip off its 100th season on Tuesday, November 6 when the Terps host Delaware at the XFINITY Center.
